Church of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà Monument · Sant Jaume de Frontanyà, Berguedà, Barcelona The church of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà, in the centre of the village of the same name (Berguedà), is the only vestige of a former Augustinian monastery built around 1070 as the seat of a community of canons governed by a prior. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional, it is one of the most notable Romanesque churches in Catalonia: with a Latin-cross plan, a barrel-vaulted nave and three semicircular apses opening onto the transept, it is crowned at the crossing by a dome on twelve-sided squinches, unique in Catalonia. The western façade arranges its decoration of Lombard arcading and pilaster strips into six panels, and preserves capitals from the old cloister discovered in 1965. The village, with barely 25 inhabitants, has been protected as the setting of the church since 2005. Photo: Araceli Merino (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Sant Jaume de Frontanyà
