Castle of Puig-reig Monument · Puig-reig, Berguedà, Barcelona The castle of Puig-reig stands on a hill beside the Llobregat river, above the village of the same name, in the Berguedà, and is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection); at its foot stands the Romanesque church of Sant Martí, from the 12th century. It formed part of the line of fortresses that, from the year 798, organised the Hispanic March along the Llobregat and Cardener rivers, and it already existed at the end of the 9th century; the first documentary reference dates from 907, with the consecration of Sant Martí. It belonged to the viscounts of Berguedà, whose last holder, the troubadour Guillem de Berguedà, bequeathed it in 1187 to the Order of the Temple, seat of its commandery of the Berguedà and Cerdanya until 1312, when it passed to the Order of the Hospital. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was converted into a farmhouse, losing its military structure. Photo: Antoni Grifol (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Puig-reig
