The battle of Molins de Rei Historical milestone · Molins de Rei, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona Image of Molins de Rei, not of the place itself. The battle of Molins de Rei was fought on 21 December 1808, in the Baix Llobregat, during the Peninsular War. After breaking the blockade of Barcelona, the French general Saint-Cyr attacked the troops of General Réding again, about 18,000 men regrouped along the Llobregat line, centred on the bridge of Molins de Rei. The French feigned an attack across that bridge, but crossed via the fords of Sant Feliu and Sant Joan Despí, overrunning the Spanish left flank and rearguard; Réding's troops fled through Corbera de Llobregat, pursued for fifteen hours. The French captured 1200 prisoners, including the Count of Caldagués, and fifty pieces of artillery. The defeat left the plain open and consolidated the Napoleonic occupation of Barcelona. 1808 Photo: pere prlpz (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Molins de Rei
