Bridge of el Diable de Martorell Monument · Martorell, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona A bridge over the Llobregat river at the entrance to Martorell, on the boundary with Castellbisbal, formerly called the bridge of Sant Bartomeu. Of Roman origin, it formed part of the Via Augusta and was built around 10 BC for the passage of ox carts, 130 metres in length; until the 14th century it was the only bridge in the lower Llobregat valley. From that period the foundations of the abutments survive, bearing carved marks of the legions that worked on it. The current bridge, with two unequal pointed-arch spans, is mostly Gothic work from the late 13th century (1283), restored in 1768 and 1933; destroyed during the Civil War, it was rebuilt in the 1950s. On the Castellbisbal side stands a Roman triumphal arch, very deteriorated despite its 1928 restoration. Both bridge and arch are declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Photo: Jaume Meneses (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Martorell
