La Culla Monument · Manresa, Bages, Barcelona La Culla, a vernacular building from the 17th century, is a large farmhouse with a central square-plan block of two storeys and an attic, and a three-storey tower reached by a spiral staircase, in the municipal district of Manresa. The place name Culla already appears in a parchment of 1009, referring to some vineyards, and the first documentary evidence of the house dates from the 14th century; in medieval times it belonged to the Seu de Manresa, and its inhabitants, surnamed Culla, were remensa peasants until 1486, when they became owners of the farmhouse. Situated next to the royal road from Manresa to Barcelona, it functioned as a watchtower and served as an observation post during the plague of 1500. It became one of the wealthiest farmhouses in Manresa, until phylloxera ruined its wine-growing business. Photo: Elmoianes (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Manresa
