Ignacio de Loyola in Manresa Historical milestone · Manresa, Bages, Barcelona Image of Manresa, not of the place itself. On his way to Jerusalem, where he wished to make a pilgrimage after his conversion, Íñigo de Loyola passed through Montserrat and stopped in Manresa, where he began to develop his spiritual exercises, the foundation of the future Ignatian spirituality. Between 1522 and 1523 he stayed there for more than ten months, divided between a cave beside the Cardener and the hospital of Santa Llúcia, and during that time he drafted the core of the Spiritual Exercises, the founding text of the Society of Jesus, which he himself would found years later and of which he would be the first general. 1522-1523 Photo: Otger Cataló (CC BY 3.0) What to see and do in Manresa
