Bridge of el Diable de Cardona Monument · Cardona, Bages, Barcelona The Pont del Diable, or pont Trencat, is an unfinished bridge over the river Cardener, at the entrance to the town of Cardona, and forms part of the Way of St James. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of Catalan heritage protection) in 1962, it is formed of two arches of different width and height resting on the rocks of the riverbed, which makes it describe an obtuse angle; its construction, in ashlar laid in horizontal courses, is dated to around the 15th century. The first documented record is from 1424, when a council ordered alms to be collected for the work, given the danger that crossing the Cardener posed for pilgrims on their way to Montserrat, Zaragoza or Santiago de Compostela. According to popular tradition, the bridge may have had as many as five or six arches. Photo: Josep Salvany i Blanch (Public domain) What to see and do in Cardona
