Castle of Balsareny Monument · Balsareny, Bages, Barcelona A Gothic castle overlooking the town of Balsareny, in the Bages, documented since the year 951 in Carolingian charters. The present building, pentagonal in plan with an interior courtyard, dates from the 14th century, although it preserves Romanesque remains in the lower parts. In 1063 the count of Barcelona Berenguer Ramon I enfeoffed it to Bernat and Miró Riculf. Within the walled and battlemented precinct are preserved the cellar, the cistern, the stables and the dungeon, as well as the church of Santa María, a Romanesque church from the 12th century rebuilt in later periods. It has been declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional since 1949. Photo: Josep Renalias (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Balsareny
