Church of Santa Maria de Sant Martí Sarroca Monument · Sant Martí Sarroca, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The church of Santa Maria is Romanesque, from the 12th century, on the hill of la Roca, in Sant Martí Sarroca (Alt Penedès); together with the castle it forms the Monumental Complex of la Roca, today a municipal museum. The castle's first church was commissioned by Arnau de Santmartí; it was enlarged at the end of the 12th century on the earlier 10th-century building and was consecrated in 1204. Its Romanesque apse is considered one of the finest of its style in Catalonia. It preserves the Gothic altarpiece of the Ascension of the Lord, from 1421, attributed to Jaume Cabrera; the octagonal bell tower was added in 1600 and two side chapels with a Baroque doorway in 1633. Puig i Cadafalch directed the restoration in 1906, during which the Romanesque image of the Virgin of Sarroca was discovered, destroyed in 1936. It has been declared a historic-artistic monument since 1931. Photo: Angela Llop (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Sant Martí Sarroca
