Castle of Sant Martí Sarroca Monument · Sant Martí Sarroca, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The Castell de Sant Martí Sarroca crowns a hill overlooking the municipality of the same name, in the Alt Penedès. It originates in the 10th century, after the conquest from the Muslims by Galí de Santmartí, and was enlarged by his son Guillem in the 11th century; between the 12th and 13th centuries new buildings were added, among them the church of Santa Maria, and the complex combines Romanesque and Gothic architecture with later historicist elements. After passing through several lineages, the Pia Almoina of Barcelona acquired it at auction in 1481 and held it until 1837. Badly degraded after the civil conflicts, it was rebuilt from 1963 onward and today houses a museum with archaeological and ethnological pieces, among them the Venus of the Penedès, Iberian pottery of the 3rd-2nd centuries BC.
