The tomb of Beatriz de Portugal Monument · Toro, Alfoz de Toro, Zamora The monastery of Sancti Spiritus el Real, founded by Teresa Gil in 1307 and declared a monument on 27 September 1943, houses beneath a Mudejar coffered ceiling, in the choir of its church, the alabaster tomb of Beatrice of Portugal, queen consort of Castile through her marriage to John I, who withdrew to Toro after the truce of 1411 and died around 1420. The queen's recumbent statue crowns a chest decorated with reliefs: on the front, the Calvary between two angels; on one side, six Dominican saints between niches; at the foot, the Annunciation. The plinth shows ten lions alongside the coats of arms of the kingdom of Portugal. Also resting nearby are Teresa Gil, the founder, and Leonor Sánchez de Castilla, prioress of the monastery and granddaughter of Alfonso XI. Photo: Borjaanimal (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Toro
