In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Kingdom of León, within the Encomienda sanjuanista of Fresno el Viejo, the eastern boundary with the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Medina del Campo, and until the 19th century it was attached to the province of Toro. Its church of Santa María del Castillo, declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a heritage-protection category, predecessor of the current Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1982, has three naves under plaster vaulting, a shallow dome over the main chapel, a Plateresque altarpiece and a Mudéjar coffered ceiling with delicate interlacing; its Mudéjar tower, begun in the 15th century on an ashlar base, was completed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
