Church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo Monument · Muriel de Zapardiel, Tierra de Medina, Valladolid The church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, also known as that of the Assumption, stands in Muriel de Zapardiel (Valladolid) and is one of the most valuable Romanesque-Mudéjar churches in Castile and León, built between the 11th and 12th centuries and rebuilt in the 16th. Beside it, separate from the church, stands a civil watchtower which is believed to have formed part, in the Middle Ages, of a Templar commandery to which the whole complex belonged. The church is described in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico, and a scale model is preserved today at the Parque temático Mudéjar in Olmedo. Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a heritage-protection category that preceded today's BIC designation) in 1983, on 12 January 2026 a large part of the apse wall collapsed, leaving the church closed to the public.
