Castrodeza and the Order of St John Historical milestone · Castrodeza, Montes Torozos, Valladolid Image of Castrodeza, not of the place itself. In 1172 King Ferdinand II of León gave the church of Santa María de Castrodeza to the Order of St John of Jerusalem, and it was brought into the commandery of Wamba, created in 1140 from another donation by the infanta Sancha Raimúndez. Under this jurisdiction, dependent on the grand priory of Castile and León -seated since 1183 at the castle of Consuegra-, Castrodeza had a prior subordinate to the commander of Wamba, responsible for administering its local revenues; in the mid-14th century it appears listed in the Becerro de las Behetrías under the name Castro Muça. The lordship lasted until Mendizábal's disentailment of 1836. That medieval church was replaced in the 18th century by the neoclassical building that presides over the village today. 1172 Photo: Rastrojo (D•ES) (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Castrodeza
