Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena Monument · Valbuena de Duero, Campo de Peñafiel, Valladolid A Cistercian monastery founded around 1143 by Estefanía Armengol, daughter of Count Armengol V of Urgel and granddaughter of Count Pedro Ansúrez, on the flood plain of the Duero, in what is now the municipality of Valbuena de Duero. Its first monks came from the French abbey of Berdona, itself a daughter house of Morimond. From this monastery came the foundations of Rioseco in 1148, Bonaval in 1164 and Palazuelos in 1169. With the Mendizábal Confiscation only its church remained standing and in use, becoming the parish of the hamlet of San Bernardo. Declared a monument in 1931, in 1967 the archbishopric of Valladolid acquired the monastic buildings, and in the late 1990s the complex passed to the Las Edades del Hombre Foundation; today it operates as a five-star spa hotel of the Castilla Termal chain.
