The Beatus of Osma Curiosity · El Burgo de Osma, Tierras del Burgo, Soria Image of El Burgo de Osma, not of the place itself. The manuscript, an 11th-century work finished on 3 June 1086 by the copyist Petrus and the illuminator Martinus, contains 71 miniatures that combine the style of the Beatos with the nascent Romanesque illumination, possibly arrived from France. Because of its stylistic closeness to fragments preserved in the Archive of the Chancery of Valladolid, it is believed to have been made at the Royal Monastery of San Benito de Sahagún, then headed by Abbot Bernardo de Sedirac, later Archbishop of Toledo, who appointed Pedro de Bourges archdeacon, the future bishop of Osma; this link would explain the transfer of the codex from Sahagún to Osma. There is also an old bond between the see and the Beato de Liébana himself, mentor of Eterio de Osma. It is kept in the cathedral treasury under the shelfmark Cod. 1.
