Santibáñez de la Sierra Village · Santibáñez de la Sierra, Sierra de Francia, Salamanca Santibáñez de la Sierra is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the sub-comarca of Las Quilamas, within the Sierra de Francia, with 142 inhabitants spread between the capital and the settlements of Casillas de las Erías, Puentes del Alagón and Santa María de los Llanos. The village sits on the slope of a mountain crowned by the Peñita Palomera, at around 610 metres, and overlooks the valley carved by the río Saltillo, a tributary of the Alagón, already within the Tagus basin. Its name recalls an old hermitage dedicated to San Juan, today reduced to its foundations, which for centuries was the patron and summer festival of the place. At Puentes del Alagón it preserves a Roman bridge from the 1st century BC, one of the oldest in the Peninsula, and a Visigothic inscription dates its San Juan hermitage to the year 583.
