Villares de la Reina Village · Villares de la Reina, La Armuña, Salamanca Villares de la Reina is a municipality in the comarca of La Armuña, in the province of Salamanca, integrated into the metropolitan area of the capital, from which it is only five kilometres away. It was founded in the Middle Ages by order of the kings of León, within the quarter of Armuña in the jurisdiction of Salamanca, and its name, documented as Villar de la Reyna, joins the Leonese term villar, equivalent to village, with the surname de la Reina, in reference to Berenguela, wife of Alfonso IX of León, who lived for a time on what is now the estate of Los Palacios. Its closeness to Salamanca, next to the Los Villares industrial estate, has driven notable population growth in recent decades, up to the roughly 6,780 inhabitants of today, spread across several population centres.
