The church of San Esteban Monument · Castellanos de Moriscos, La Armuña, Salamanca The church of San Esteban, a 16th-century work, has a single nave that narrows towards the main chapel, with a sacristy added later and a tower at the foot; it is divided into three bays by round arches on pilasters, which translate on the outside into powerful buttresses, and is covered by a simple two-pitched timber roof frame, while the main chapel displays a ribbed vault. Its portal, with clear Hontañón-style features, is arranged in two tiers with medallions, a shell-headed niche and scrolled brackets, crowned by a triangular pediment. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 29 April 1999, it is the historic building of a municipality that the proximity of Salamanca has taken from the 312 inhabitants recorded by Madoz to more than three thousand.
