Abbey of San Isidro de Dueñas Monument · Venta de Baños, El Cerrato, Palencia Image of Venta de Baños, not of the place itself. The abbey of San Isidro de Dueñas, popularly known as La Trapa since it became a Trappist monastery in 1891, has its documented origin in a charter granted by the León king García I in the year 911, although the restoration of the monastic community, previously dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, was already due to his father, Alfonso III, around 883, when he repopulated the area with Mozarabic Benedictine monks from Córdoba. The monastery was an important centre of pilgrimage thanks to the relics of Saint Isidore of Chios, donated by García I and considered miraculous for protecting fields and harvests. It combines Romanesque elements with the Baroque reconstruction that followed the fire of 1604; its portal is flanked by capitals depicting vices and sins and it retains semicircular apses.
