Mountain range of el Brezo Nature · Santibáñez de la Peña, Alto Carrión, Palencia Image of Santibáñez de la Peña, not of the place itself. A limestone range running from east to west from Cantoral de la Peña to Guardo, with slopes of oak and beech woodland and summits approaching 2,000 metres; it forms the southern edge of the Montaña Palentina. Also called sierra del Brezo and de la Peña, it acts as a natural wall between the plain and the Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina nature park, where rivers such as the Valdavia, the Boedo and the Burejo rise. Its highest summits are Peña Redonda, at 1,993 metres, and the pico del Fraile, at 2,025. It preserves singular woodlands such as the Peña Mayor pine forest, a survivor of the area's old Scots pine woods, the Tertiary-era Tosande yew grove, and the Peña Lampa juniper grove, the northernmost in the Iberian Peninsula. On its slopes stands the sanctuary of the Virgen del Brezo. Photo: CaudelDuc (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Santibáñez de la Peña
