La Nava-Campos Norte Special Protection Area Nature · Joarilla de las Matas, Sahagún, León Image of Joarilla de las Matas, not of the place itself. The eastern edge of the municipality lies within this Special Protection Area for Birds of the Natura 2000 network, designated for the value of its cereal steppes for species such as the little bustard and the great bustard. The area, covering 54,935.9 hectares, extends mainly across the provinces of Palencia and Valladolid, in the Tierra de Campos district, and only a narrow strip enters the province of León, near Valdespino Vaca. The landscape is typical of the Tierra de Campos, a cereal-growing plain crossed by the Sequillo and Valdeginate rivers, by the Campos branch of the Canal de Castilla and by the Cea-Carrión transfer canal, and it includes the Laguna de la Nava wetland, undergoing regeneration after years of being drained.
