Laguna Grande of Bercianos Nature · Bercianos del Real Camino, Sahagún, León Image of Bercianos del Real Camino, not of the place itself. An endorheic wetland of steppe character in the district of Bercianos del Real Camino, in the Tierra de Sahagún area, in the southeast of the province of León. With an area of 15 hectares and at an altitude of 820 metres, it is the largest of the 73 wetlands scattered across southeastern León and one of the richest in the province in bird variety: besides waterfowl, it is home to steppe species such as the stone-curlew, the great bustard, the black-bellied sandgrouse and the little bustard, along with the Montagu's harrier and the lesser kestrel, and fish, crayfish and amphibians live in its waters. A local legend tells that many residents of Bercianos plunged into its waters fleeing the attack of Alfonso the Battler, and that the call of the moorhen still recalls their wandering souls.
