The Esla, the Duero's largest tributary by flow —hence the saying "the Esla carries the water and the Duero the fame"— rises in the municipality of Maraña, beneath the Mampodre massif and between the passes of Tarna, Las Señales, El Pontón and San Glorio, in the heart of the Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre regional park. From its source in the Cantabrian Mountains it runs 287.83 kilometres from north to south through the provinces of León and Zamora, draining a basin of 16,026 km² that makes it Spain's second-longest tributary after the Genil. Its waters are held back, already near its headwaters, in the Riaño reservoir. Photo: Teofrasto820 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Maraña
