Lake of La Baña Nature · Encinedo, La Cabrera, León The lake of La Baña is a glacial lake set in a cirque beneath Peña Trevinca and Peña Surbía, quartzite peaks that rise above 2,000 metres, in the municipality of Encinedo (La Cabrera, León); it takes its name from the village of La Baña, and the Cabrera river rises from it. It was declared a Natural Monument on 11 October 1990. Despite lying in an area with open-cast mining operations, it maintains a high level of conservation: its lower slopes and streambeds are covered with oaks and birches, with yews and hollies scarcer, and its fauna notably includes the wolf and the golden eagle, along with goshawk, sparrowhawk, Bonelli's eagle, peregrine falcon, marten, genet, otter and fox. Its isolated and hard-to-reach location has kept it apart from notable cultural values. Photo: Karkeixa (CC BY 3.0) What to see and do in Encinedo
