Pottery of Jiménez de Jamuz Curiosity · Santa Elena de Jamuz, La Bañeza, León Image of Santa Elena de Jamuz, not of the place itself. Jiménez de Jamuz, a hamlet of Santa Elena de Jamuz on the banks of the río Jamuz, preserves a long pottery tradition with workshops such as Taruso, Valentín Peñín, Miguel San Juan Peñín and Esteban, and has a Pottery Museum devoted to this craft. Its clay was used by Antoni Gaudí for the ceramic pieces that cover part of the Bishop's Palace of Astorga. The village is also notable for its caves or cellars dug next to the river, once used to make and store the local wine and now converted into gathering places, and for its own traditions such as the mayos, the autumn comedies and a living Passion play performed since 1976.
