Bembibre Village · Bembibre, El Bierzo, León Bembibre is a town in the province of León, in the comarca of El Bierzo, with about 8,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Bierzo Alto; its name comes from the pre-Roman Paemeióbriga, and already in 15 BC its inhabitants appear referred to as castelani paemeiobrigenses in what is known as the Bronce de Bembibre. It sits at 664 metres, in the valley of the río Boeza, at the foot of the sierra de Gistredo, whose coal and iron mining resources shaped its economy and its role as a place of transit and head of the former Señorío de Bembibre. Since 2023 the town has been Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It venerates the Santo Ecce Homo in its sanctuary, and since 1973 has celebrated the Festival de Exaltación del Botillo, declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (Spain's highest official tourism recognition for a festival) in 2025.
