The Camino Natural Vía Verde de la Sierra de la Demanda runs 52 kilometres between Arlanzón and Monterrubio de la Demanda (Burgos) along the bed of a former mining railway built in 1902, which carried ore from Barbadillo de Herreros to Villafría. The route, with four viaducts, one tunnel and a 380-metre drop in elevation, opened as a greenway in the early 2000s and is part of the Red de Caminos Naturales of the Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación. It is maintained by the association of the six municipalities it crosses, among them Pineda de la Sierra; given the area's sparse population and limited municipal budgets, the route suffers from serious conservation problems.
