Viewpoint of el Monumento Natural de Monte Santiago Activity · Junta de Villalba de Losa, Las Merindades, Burgos The Monte Santiago natural monument stretches across the eastern end of the Sierra Salvada, on the boundary between Burgos, Álava and the enclave of Orduña. At around 900 metres of altitude it combines a beech forest with broad heathland, and its ravines shelter populations of vultures and birds of prey. Here the Nervión river rises, fed by underground waters that run beneath a karst landscape with sinkholes, forming the Salto del Nervión, a waterfall of more than 200 metres that already falls into the Délica valley, in Orduña. The beech forest reaches the edge of the municipality, and its paths lead to the viewpoint over this fall, the highest on the peninsula. On the summit of Charlazo stands a statue of the Virgin of Orduña, and on the Fraideburu crag the remains of an old wolf trap survive.
