The sanctuary of Santa Casilda Monument · Salinillas de Bureba, La Bureba, Burgos Perched on a rocky outcrop of the Bureba, near Revillalcón, the medieval temple holds a doorway designed by Nicolás de Vergara and, on its altar, an image of the saint carved by Diego de Siloé, as well as a baroque camarín, Gothic reliefs and ex-votos. Beneath the church, a door leads down to the small cave where the tomb holding the remains of Santa Casilda is kept, the daughter of the sultan of Toledo who, according to legend, hid food for the Christian captives under her cloak, passing it off as flowers; there she retired as a hermit after being cured at the nearby springs, whose waters tradition still links to fertility. Since 1794 La Tabera has been celebrated, a pilgrimage (romería) to the sanctuary on the Tuesday before Ascension. Photo: Bocachete (Public domain) What to see and do in Salinillas de Bureba
