Castle of Castronuevo Monument · Rivilla de Barajas, La Moraña, Ávila Castronuevo castle, beside the road from Ávila to Salamanca, in the district of Rivilla de Barajas, was erected by Gil de Vivero before 1481 and later remodelled by his son Rodrigo, who in 1489 sold it to the Duke of Alba for 6,200,000 maravedís; it has belonged to the House of Alba ever since. It consists of a first rectangular enclosure with cylindrical corner towers, and a central rectangular core with cubes and square towers enclosing an ashlar palace with an arcaded gallery in the courtyard. Beneath the first enclosure open large brick vaulted halls, considered the best-preserved underground vaults in Europe, today converted into stables. The generic 1949 declaration protecting castles covered the complex, built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Photo: r_santos (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Rivilla de Barajas
