Castle of Malpica Monument · Malpica de Tajo, Torrijos, Toledo 14th-century castle built on the banks of the Tagus, the town's main monument and one of the best sited on the river's banks. It was built on a 10th-century Arab fortress and from 1307 belonged to the Gómez de Toledo family, who turned it into a residence. In 1420 it served as a refuge for King John II of Castile, and in the 17th century its interior was remodeled as a palatial residence, with new windows and a courtyard with columns and brick galleries. Built of brick filled with rammed earth, it has a square floor plan with solid towers at the corners, a moat on three of its sides -the fourth is protected by the river- and rectangular merlons. Owned by the dukes of Arión, it is kept in good condition and furnished, after having served as a setting for RTVE's series Isabel. Photo: No machine-readable author provided.
