Bread Square Monument · Talavera de la Reina, Talavera, Toledo The Plaza del Pan is the main square of Talavera de la Reina and the heart of the old town, presided over by the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, a Gothic church begun in the 12th century. Rectangular in shape and about 4630 m², it already hosted jousts and tournaments in the Middle Ages; today its centre gathers fountains and Talavera ceramic benches amid greenery. The historic-artistic ensemble surrounding it also includes the former archbishop's palace, seat of the town hall where the writer Fernando de Rojas served as mayor, medieval buildings, the present town hall, the Hospital de la Misericordia, today the Rafael Morales Cultural Centre, and remains of the Roman temples of Jupiter and Vespasian beside the forum.
