Church of Santiago el Nuevo Monument · Talavera de la Reina, Talavera, Toledo Fourteenth-century church which, according to some hypotheses, was built over a former synagogue. It preserves a chancel altarpiece made on 18th-century Talavera tilework and an organ of the same century. It is a Mudejar work of rectangular plan and three naves, built of brick, marble and materials of Roman and Visigothic origin; its west front shows a rose window of brick tracery above a frieze of pointed, multifoil horseshoe arches, and beside the south side stands a loggia in Renaissance-Mudejar style. The historian Juan de Ferreras (1652-1735), author of an extensive Historia de España, was parish priest of this church; declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (former heritage-protection category, precursor to today's Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1931, it is today a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
