Church of San Prudencio Monument · Talavera de la Reina, Talavera, Toledo The church of San Prudencio, in the historic centre of Talavera de la Reina, is part of the Jeronymite conventual complex of Santa Catalina, also called San Jerónimo, founded by the Archbishop of Toledo Pedro Tenorio in 1397 and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1992. The church was begun in 1455 and opened in 1469; in 1536 it was enlarged with a new main chapel and an octagonal Renaissance sacristy, whose construction came to threaten collapse and forced the summoning of Juan de Herrera, leaving cracks still visible today. After Mendizábal's disentailment, the monastery was closed and sold in 1835 and passed through various uses until in 1909 the Fundación Aguirre acquired it to house the Asilo de San Prudencio, from which the complex takes its present name.
