Curiosity · La Iglesuela del Tiétar, Sierra de San Vicente, Toledo

La Iglesuela del Tiétar, in the Sierra de San Vicente (Toledo), owes its name to a small early church built where the village church stands today. It was previously called La Eglesuela de Guaryerva until 1276, when King Alfonso X granted these lands to Velasco Velázquez de Ávila, who renamed it Florida for its abundant vegetation; over time the name reverted to a diminutive of the old one. In September 2015 the town council proposed adding the suffix "del Tiétar" for tourism and geographic-identification purposes. The local referendum, held in August 2016, gave 80.44% of votes in favour of the change against 19.56% who preferred to keep the name; the change received official approval on 24 April 2018.
