Castle of Polán Monument · Polán, Montes de Toledo, Toledo The castle of Polán, in the Montes de Toledo, is the municipality's main defensive remain. It was built around the 12th century to defend the area from Muslim incursions coming from south of the Tagus, and was remodelled in the 14th and 15th centuries; in 1470 it suffered an attack by troops sent by Pero López de Ayala against the stronghold of Lope de Estúñiga. Of its rubble-stone fabric two towers survive, reinforced with sturdy convex-profiled exterior buttresses similar to those of French castles of the 11th and 12th centuries. Its interior is divided into four floors, with arrow slits and decorated windows, and the tallest tower retains double-curved prow corbels typical of Toledan architecture. Abandoned since the 15th century, today it survives only in part. Photo: Rodelar (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Polán
