Castle of Peñaflor Monument · Cuerva, Montes de Toledo, Toledo A fortification located in the municipal district of Cuerva, in the south of the province of Toledo, next to the road linking the town with Gálvez. Its construction is attributed to the reign of Alfonso X the Wise, in the 13th century. In the 15th century it was acquired by the adelantado of Cazorla, Juan Carrillo, and later passed to Garcilaso de la Vega, father of the poet, whose descendants lived there until the 17th century. Its last owners, the counts of Oñate, abandoned it in 1576 due to its poor condition, and in 1881 the main façade was demolished to obtain gravel to pave the road. Rectangular in plan with three round towers at the corners, it preserves a battlemented wall-walk with machicolations, but never had a keep or a moat. Today it stands in advanced ruin and is owned by the Cuerva town council. Photo: ReyDerayos24 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cuerva
