Luis Tristán, Disciple of El Greco Curiosity · Yepes, Mesa de Ocaña, Toledo Image of Yepes, not of the place itself. The painter Luis Tristán (Toledo, c. 1585-1624), regarded as El Greco's best pupil, worked in the master's workshop between 1603 and 1606 before spending a period in Italy, between 1606 and 1613, which shaped his mature style: a tone of grave harshness, with earthy tones against which touches of luminous colour flash, and figures sturdier than El Greco's stylised ones. His link with Yepes is embodied in the altarpiece he painted in 1616 for the town's collegiate church, with six scenes from the life of Jesus and eight half-length figures of saints. The town is also linked to other figures such as friar Diego de Yepes, royal confessor. Photo: M. Martin Vicente (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in Yepes
