Hermitage of el Castellar Monument · Villarrubia de Santiago, Mesa de Ocaña, Toledo A 19th-century hermitage built on the site of the old Castillo del Tormón, a 12th-century fortification abandoned in the time of Alfonso VII. It is the sanctuary of the Virgen del Castellar, patroness of Villarrubia de Santiago, located about 5 kilometres south of the village, on a rocky hill beside the Tajo, near the sodium sulphate mines. Its interior consists of a nave divided into three bays covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. The patronal festival is held from 5 to 10 September, with a procession and solemn Mass on the 8th: the Virgin comes down from the hermitage on the back of a mule to a chapel situated 1.5 kilometres away, from where she is carried in procession to the parish church. On the last Sunday of September the Bajada pilgrimage is also held. Photo: LBM1948 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Villarrubia de Santiago
