Lope de Vega Theatre of Ocaña Monument · Ocaña, Mesa de Ocaña, Toledo The Lope de Vega Theatre occupies the building of the former College of the Society of Jesus of Ocaña, founded in 1558 thanks to a donation from Luis de Calatayud y Borjas, which served in turn as a school, a cavalry barracks and, after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, a public school. In 1832 the Sociedad Benéfico Dramática de Ocaña converted the college's old church into a theatre, then called the Teatro Principal; the present building, already bearing the name Lope de Vega, opened in 1986 after a long reconstruction, with a capacity of 604 seats. The façade retains remains of the original foundation, with a stone doorway of the Doric order topped by a heraldic coat of arms, and a three-storey tower in Mudéjar-Classical style. It is today the centre of the town's cultural life. Photo: EMPISD (CC BY-SA 2.5) What to see and do in Ocaña
