Hermitage of Santa Juana Monument · Numancia de la Sagra, La Sagra, Toledo Image of Numancia de la Sagra, not of the place itself. The Santa Juana hermitage, built in 1662 with contributions from local residents on the site where Sor Juana de la Cruz was born and authorized by Archbishop Baltasar Moscoso y Sandoval, is every 9 March the starting point of a pilgrimage to the Monastery of Santa Juana de la Cruz, in Cubas de la Sagra, following the route taken by the young Juana Vázquez as she fled an arranged marriage. Vázquez entered the monastery in 1496 and rose to become its abbess, gaining fame for her gift of preaching, which drew the attention of Emperor Charles V and Cardinal Cisneros; she died in 1534 and Pope Francis approved her beatification in November 2024. The day, also known as tortilla day, has been celebrated since the 16th century. Photo: Rodelar (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Numancia de la Sagra
