Pilgrimage of la Virgen de Palomares

Activity · La Puebla de Almoradiel, La Mancha de Toledo, Toledo

Image of La Puebla de Almoradiel, not of the place itself.

Romería (pilgrimage) that, every first Saturday of June, carries the image of the Virgen de Palomares on foot from the parish of La Puebla de Almoradiel to its ermita, located 9 kilometres from the town, between this town and Quero. Pilgrims stop to stock up at the Casa de los Pastores, and at the ermita an open-air mass is celebrated, followed in the afternoon by a rosary procession through the fields, with food stalls and dancing until nightfall. Tradition tells that some farmers found the image buried and, unsure which town should take it in, placed it on a cart and let the oxen decide the way, which led to La Puebla instead of Quero, the origin of the dispute between the two towns over the Virgin.
