The municipality of El Romeral was the scene, in 1521, of the Battle of the Atalayuelas, one of the episodes of the Revolt of the Comuneros of Castile. Troops loyal to King Charles I, led by the corraleño Gonzalo Collado, clashed with comunero forces aligned with the bishop of Zamora, Antonio de Acuña. Victory went to the royalist side, in a battle that left 57 dead, buried in the parish church of the Virgin of the Assumption of El Romeral.
