Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de El Romeral Monument · El Romeral, La Mancha de Toledo, Toledo Church of El Romeral (Toledo, La Mancha toledana), a church from the late 15th century and the main monument in this small town. It is Gothic in style: above the presbytery, built first, rises a Gothic tierceron vault bearing the coat of arms of Cardinal Mendoza, Archbishop of Toledo between 1483 and 1495; the nave was finished last. It follows the Christian canon of east-west orientation, with the entrance facing towards Jerusalem. It originally also served as a burial place, until the graves were moved to an outside cemetery. In 1521 it received the bodies of 57 victims of the battle of las Atalayuelas, during the Comunidades revolt, buried within it. Photo: manuel m. v. (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in El Romeral
