Castle of Santisteban Monument · San Martín de Pusa, La Jara, Toledo The castle of Santisteban is a fortress in an advanced state of ruin located in the Valdepusa estate, seven kilometres from San Martín de Pusa (Toledo), on the banks of the Pusa river. It dates from the 12th century: in 1117 the constant Almoravid assaults on the Montes de Toledo area prompted its construction, within the La Jara district, as part of the defensive system built by Alfonso VI after the reconquest of Toledo in 1085. It occupies a strategic position on top of a hill, dominating the passage between Toledo and Talavera de la Reina. In the 14th century it belonged to Diego Gómez de Toledo and later to the marquises of Malpica and dukes of Arión, lords of Valdepusa; among its ruins a stone bearing crosses of the Order of Saint John was found, which is why it is also believed to be linked to the Knights Hospitaller.
