Roman Site of La Mina Nature · La Pueblanueva, La Jara, Toledo Image of La Pueblanueva, not of the place itself. The Roman site of La Mina, in La Pueblanueva (La Jara, Toledo), is a late Roman mausoleum that functioned as a collective family pantheon, on the left bank of the Tajo, in the hamlet of Las Vegas de San Antonio. It is an octagonal building, with a central crypt of granite ashlar and stuccoed brick vaults, built in opus caementicium; it continued in use during the Visigothic, Islamic and medieval Christian periods. Found here was the famous Early Christian sarcophagus known as the Sarcófago de los Apóstoles, carved in marble in the time of the emperor Theodosius and now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, evidence of a wealthy villa in the Tajo valley. It has been known since 1871 and was excavated in the mid-20th century by the Instituto Arqueológico Alemán de Madrid. Photo: LBM1948 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in La Pueblanueva
