Castle of Canturias Monument · Belvís de la Jara, La Jara, Toledo Image of Belvís de la Jara, not of the place itself. Medieval fortification located next to the Tajo which served as a Christian bridgehead on the left bank of the river during the Reconquista. It formed part, together with the fortresses of Piedraescrita and Los Castillos, of the defence of the territory, completed by a network of watchtowers to guard the Tajo frontier. After the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, the territory passed into the hands of Talavera and the archbishopric of Toledo.
