The embroideries of Lagartera Curiosity · Lagartera, La Campana de Oropesa, Toledo The embroidery of Lagartera, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2023, in the intangible heritage category, is the culmination of a set of textile crafts that spread from this municipality in the Campana de Oropesa across Toledo, influencing the embroidery of Oropesa and Talavera. The technique, linked to women and the domestic sphere, has medieval roots and became an industry after the Mendizábal Disentailment, when poverty forced the town council to sell communal lands in 1853; embroidery, trousseaus and costumes were sold from then on in various cities, carried by women wearing the regional costume, which promoted their work. Its spread in the 20th century was driven by Sorolla's mural Regions of Spain, showing people of Lagartera dressed in traditional style, as well as by the photographs of Ortiz Echagüe.
