The 1642 town charter Curiosity · Lagartera, La Campana de Oropesa, Toledo Image of Lagartera, not of the place itself. Lagartera obtained its own jurisdiction and the title of town in 1642, when the seventh Count of Oropesa, Duarte Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, granted it independence from the comital town. The count, with his coffers in difficulty and pressed by King Philip IV, to whom he owed 180,000 ducats, accepted a substantial sum of money in exchange for Lagartera's independence, granting the village its own jurisdiction and justice.
